2019 payout
by Court320- 5 replies

I’m curious as to the payouts from the risk management pool in 2019-2020. Over $2 million dollars, does anyone know what was paid out? I tired looking at the slides and watched the video link from the board meeting but cannot find the answers?

The outrage we are seeing in response to the sexual assault, the Superintendent stepping down, and two board directors stepping down recently is incredibly misdirected. This is unfortunate, because nothing is going to change if the community refuses to look in the mirror and recognize that we are ultimately responsible for this mess. Upon the announcement of Hollowell and Pendergraft resigning, a large group of people took to Facebook to praise them as directors while bashing the district for their shortcomings on the district's page. Now groups are forming to discuss how to hold the district accountable, but they refuse to allow discussion related to the upcoming e…

Many teachers are saddened and also believe there is a lack of accountability. Let’s remember that they are dedicated to our kids and are not at fault for the shortcomings of district leadership. Please read and share the link below to see how you can support them right now. https://tahomaparents.org/news/17l29ip3v3baeo1bd3h5xn2p7or16j

No official correspondence has been submitted, but the admin of the TSD discussion page relayed a joint, unofficial statement by the two directors. She confirmed this is accurate.

Director Matt Carreon's Attendance Record
by Bryan S- 7 replies
- 2.3k views
I think it should be brought to people's attention that Matt Carreon's attendance record is extremely poor. I think Matt has decent qualities, but his opponent Peacock has attended more board meetings than him, and Peacock isn't even a director yet. I am surprised he is seeking reelection, considering he doesn't appear to have time for the job? Source (Meeting Minutes): https://go.boarddocs.com/wa/tahoma/Board.nsf/Public

If you haven't yet heard, the controversial Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral To (SBIRT) has been rebranded as STAR Wellness. A great write up on SBIRT was done by Tahoma Parents last year and should be read here: Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral To (SBIRT) - What You Should Know. — Tahoma Parents. Parents have the option to opt their children out to protect their privacy. Letter from the district below: ____________________________________________________________ Dear 10th Grade Families, This is Gwendolyn Huete, Student Wellness Advocate, for the STAR Wellness Program (formerly known as SBIRT) at Tahoma High School. Thank you for…

Read the School Board's statement and Tahoma Parents' commentary here: https://tahomaparents.org/news/nnybbbg9j75wg981j4yxuudeiwa1n4 We as a community must do better to hold the board accountable, as they have failed to do their job in holding district staff accountable for this worst type of failure. Parents should not have to have fear their child being sexually abused at school. The board's gaslighting of parents and failure to take responsibility means they are not adequately equipped to lead the district. Malia Hollowell (Vice President) and Pete Miller (President) were on the board during the arrest of Neyers and have continued to fail in their response to…

Michael Pfau, Steven Reich, Vincent Nappo and Benjamin Watson reached a $3.9 million settlement with the Tahoma School District on behalf of a former student who was sexually abused by a paraeducator employed by the district. The plaintiff was a student between 5 to 7 years old when he was sexually abused by the paraeducator, Bryan Neyers, while participating in the district’s Extended Enrichment Program. Neyers was arrested and charged in 2020 and is awaiting a criminal trial, scheduled to begin July 25. For several years before his arrest, the school district received numerous reports from parents, students and staff regarding Neyers’ inappropriate behavior with st…

SCOTUS Ruling and Policy 3203
by Dash- 4 replies
If you haven’t heard, SCOTUS essentially ruled Affirmative Action practices as unconstitutional today. The ruling is in regards to race based college admissions, but sets precedent for other race based practices such as hiring. I wonder if this ruling impacts TSD policy 3203 which seeks to promote race based hiring practices in the district. I’m glad this was finally addressed. Using race as a hiring metric is a racist practice that needs to end. I don’t care what a teacher looks like. What matters is their merit! https://www.npr.org/2023/06/29/1181138066/affirmative-action-supreme-court-decision

False Accusations of Hate
by Beth R- 5 replies

I came across a post on a Tahoma Discussion Facebook page in which people where labelling parent groups (without evidence) "hate" groups. Leaders and members of the Facebook page seem extremely ideological and have connections to the Tahoma Teachers Union and current School Board directors. The FB group recently allowed the posting of personal information related to local community members and businesses owners for simply participating in or donating to groups seeking to further parental involvement. I came here to research their claims about this place, but I could not identify anything to confirm them. It is clear Tahoma Parents takes a firm stance on parental righ…

I just finished up this book and encourage everyone to read it (it's a very easy read). It does a fantastic job of explaining the history of American education and how we have shifted our school system into an industrialized output machine not focused on creating free thinking citizens (but rather worker bees). If you want to further understand the issues in an easy way, definitely give this a read! It will help you to become a better informed parent. Tahoma Sex Ed Cirriculum Reviewed
by Bryan S- 2 replies
Tahoma Parents reviewed the new sex-ed curriculum. The TSD did a great job being transparent and keeping lessons focused! Some districts are taking an unhealthy approach to this, so it's refreshing to see the TSD navigating this appropriately. https://tahomaparents.org/news/id4pkl5ei5f3on3kviniefam087isb

Pride Month

I'm sadden and hardly know where to start writing this. When someone believes in something, and their boss/supervisor encourages them to do something you're going to run with it. It promotes your way of thinking and provides for income needed to live. With that being said, I understand that no matter how many letters we write or how many times we talk to the principal it's going to go in one ear and out the other when the bosses are OKing it, unless they are bombarded with 90% parent involvement. Below is a copy of an email forward to me, after hearing about the silencing at MVM scheduled for today, June 2nd. The staff is directed or encouraged to promote and e…

This letter was sent to children over Google Classroom. What's funny is that parents haven't received any notice of this, nor do I see it on their website anywhere. Why are government paid teachers trying to push kids into participating in a protest in secret? This is honestly concerning to me.

There is only one week left to file for a school board director run. District 2 appears wide open, while nobody appears positioned to run against former School Board President Hollowell in 3. It is unfortunate that so many parents appear concerned about the direction of the district, yet so few will actually do what it takes to change the course. Hoping that someone…anyone from either of those areas steps up. Otherwise we are destined for more of the same.

Hi Everyone, I keep hearing about a bond for the TSD that will be voted on. I can't seem to find any info on it though. Is this just or rumor or is there an actual bond in the works? If there is a bond, does anyone have any info on it? I am personally hoping it's for a new high school (or middle school so we can turn MVMS back into a high school), but not holding my breath 😅.

Why is this organization being created and promoted instead of working with the already well established and highly involved PTA? Why is it trying to circumvent working with existing groups that already work hand in hand with the School Boards?

Way to go! 👏 This is a really neat program within the TSD. I wish these types of classes were mandatory as it would help students learn to discuss civics in a productive manner (something society is forgetting how to do). https://www.king5.com/article/news/education/tahoma-high-school-students-top-10-national-civics-competition/
